The core gameplay is a lot of fun, everything bolted onto that waters it down.

- The story is awful, I really hated these characters, and it always felt like I was getting dialogue out of order?
- There are two good characters, and those are Captain and the Shopkeeper. Every other character is so unbelievably annoying and has nothing relevant to say, I just wanted to stop hearing them talk.
- The procedural generation runs out of new stage types after the 3rd shard (there are 10)
- Said generation frequently leads to unpredictable BS, in a game where any mistake is essentially an instant loss on normal difficulty.
- There are only 3 bosses, which are repeated 3 times, with very minor changes.
- If we're being charitable, there really are only 3 stages that are repeated over and over--And every run feels the same regardless of what the background looks like.
- There's a big difficulty spike after shard 7 (which gets unbearable on shard 9 & 10)
- The items are not creative, and do not change how you play. Every run felt the same, for the 10 hours it took me to beat the game.
- The final boss is an interesting concept, but unwinnable unless you get a very specific run
- What's worse is that you can be having a god run, and still lose just because you're "going too fast" and the game decides to kill you for colliding with the nothing.

This is a fun game, but the effort to make it a rogue like feels so half hearted, it feels like an attempt to stretch a content bare game out to 10 hours.

real talk though the gameplay is stupidly addictive but after a few hours you'll need to install mods to let you go substantially faster because the game will feel too slow. Also everyone is ragging on the story but it's super bare bones and not even that bad. The world is ending, nobody knows why. Go.

throw on some fast paced game music or turn the volume up on the amazing soundtrack and just run.

A game that manages to be profoundly less than the sum of its parts. A mediocre story and cynical use of roguelike progression holds back incredible game play, periodically interrupted by a horribly delivered story about how blowing up the universe is good, actually. This game massively suffered from Landfall's repeated retooling and reworking of several of its core aspects, which isn't new for the studio. The script reeks of being rewritten and directionless, the game play feels like a half baked vessel to deliver the momentum based gameplay from the tech demo, and somehow it fails to even make an endless mode work. ( Seriously. Why can't I choose paths or use shops in endless mode, there's no decision making process. )

The developers copied the vague motions of popular roguelikes while failing to harness the game design principles that made them so good in the first place. Why does the gameplay and movement in the 2 year old trailers look better than this? Why is there so much cut and haphazardly retooled content. I feel like I'm playing half of the imagined project. Much like how I felt playing TABS.

Buy the game on sale, skip all the dialogue, and around the time it starts repeating bosses again, you've seen everything it has to offer.

(Kudos for the day one mod support. Credit where its due, this game has a wonderful, must play movement system, that's shot in the crib by everything else.)
