I wanted to love this game, and thankfully, after some tweaking, I think I finally can. Booting it up on my new PC, I was ready to dive back into the chaos, the survival, the thrill of rebuilding in a world overrun by the undead. And for a brief, glorious five hours, I did, until the crashes hit...

Initially, I ran into some stability issues, crashes that cut my adventure short just as I was gearing up to expand my ragtag group’s chances of survival. It was frustrating because State of Decay has so much going for it: the atmosphere is gripping, the mechanics are solid, and the tension of managing resources while fending off relentless zombie hordes is exactly what I crave in a survival game.

Thankfully, after adjusting my graphics settings from Ultra to Maximum (thanks to the community for suggesting this), the crashes seemed to ease up, and I was finally able to push forward. It’s a relief because this game shines when you’re fully immersed in its world, strategising survival, making tough calls, and adapting to an unpredictable apocalypse.

Sure, there are moments where zombie spawns feel a little too unpredictable, popping up behind me as if teleportation is part of the undead skill set, but when everything clicks, State of Decay is an experience worth diving into.

Would I recommend it? If you're willing to drop down a graphics setting for better stability, absolutely. The game delivers an intense, rewarding survival experience that fans of the genre will appreciate. With a bit of patience, it’s well worth the journey.
