TLDR: A zombie survival where looting is essential, managing resources is a must and perma death is always around the corner. The Year-One edition features the main campaign, a sandbox mode (Breakdown) and a smaller, more intense map that's military oriented (Lifeline). Lifeline and the base game both offer actual campaigns whereas Breakdown only offers a map reset whenever you feel like you've done with this map.

Story: It's never really explained what exactly happened and how, but one thing's for sure. These people aren't vegans anymore. As a crew of playable characters who can all permanently die, try to hunker down in a big enough base with proper fortification, proper guns, and ultimately try to get out of town. Your choices are your own as you have to remember you cannot always save everyone and be everywhere at once. Worse yet, you, the actual human being behind the screen, need to sleep... and when you do, the game doesn't. State of Decay, the game where your save state decays.

Gameplay: Although it is basic, it's very satisfying to build up your base and recruit people.
As mentioned before, all characters can permanently die, so it's important to remember that badly preparing before going on a big mission can mean death.
The map is relatively small, but considering how you can enter pretty much every building, it's plenty enough. There are 3 main cities in the base game and there is a big field in the middle which is supposed to have loot but I never bothered with it. Breakdown uses the exact same map as the base game and Lifeline offers a completely different map but is very straight forward and much, much smaller.
Whenever using a playing a character, it will get fatigued, which will reduce his/her max stamina and if overly injured, will also get a max health debuff, so it is important to swap every now and again.
Relationships at base can deteriorate if left unchecked, so it is sometimes important to solve issues whenever they pop up rather than later down the road.
You have a sort of currency named Influence which is capped by Fame. Everyday your Influence gets refilled at your Fame value, but if your Influence happens to go over your Fame it's fine, it'll only slowly decrease back to your Fame and once the day is over, it resets at your Fame value. So use it while you got it!
Picking up items from your stash costs Influence and putting stuff in it gives Influence. Simple and effective.
As you run, shoot, melee, execute, loot and, well, pretty much every action out there, you will earn more levels in the appropriate stat i.e.: cardio, shooting, melee, etc. When having leveled enough a specific stat, you can select a unique skill. Sometimes, it's better to wait to get the skill you want as you often can only select one.
Melee weapons are varied, both in durability and types and all have a different weight with different skills associated with them. They get worn out and eventually break if not repaired (though weirdly enough, if you just swap characters before it starts wearing out, it seems to reset its, uh, weariness).
Guns have different caliber and it can be difficult to find the ammo you need, so varying your weapons is important, and learning how to fight in melee efficiently even more so. They also wear out, though they won't blow up in your face like in Far Cry 2, they'll instead jam, which is equally bad for the zombie face shooting process.
Cars have more room if they are bigger, duh. It's also important to learn to drive backwards, seriously, don't go running hordes over with the front of your car, do it backwards, you'll thank me later. Also, they don't randomly spawn, they are saved exactly where you left them, however ruined you left them and with whatever you forgot in them.
Consumables are very important, and looting them even more so.
When finding a resource for your base (like gaz, materials, food), it'll usually pop as a rucksack on your back. You can only carry one rucksack at a time, so shoving those in a vehicule can be very useful as it only takes up one spot in the trunk. I mean, imagine putting 6 resources in your truck and one on your back and coming back to base with all that! Now that's a good run.
You can move your entire base to a new location with more spots to upgrade, more parking and more possible outposts. Your base also has actions available that can cost both resources and Influence, some of them are extremely useful and should always be on cooldown. So if you feel like you're done with an area, just move :)
Outposts basically allow you to access your base stash without the ability to deliver your rucksacks. They also give the possibility to put traps for unsuspecting hordes. Outposts are poorly explained so I'm not even sure if it has more uses than that.
The guns, melee combat and pretty much everything tbh, it's all pretty clunky. That doesn't mean it's bad, the game just shows it's age.
Characters also have traits, like a drunk, a mechanic or an engineer, so knowing this can help you figure who you should take out on a risky trip and who... not to. Cuz mechanics fix cars. Drunks aren't effective mechanics, just sayin'.
It's also very important to understand that the game progresses while you're not playing. So if you turn the game off without any food left at base, or people missing... You may get back online with a bit of a problem.

Graphics: Poor, even on release (2013). But considering how small that studio was, they release a great game with a great idea. There are also minor bugs where enemies can just warp through doors. But believe it or not, it sounds worse than it.

Audio: Nothing crazy here, the tracks work, the zombies moan and I enjoyed getting ripped in half when my truck was projected like a ragdoll (because I hit the side of a bridge) and I landed right in the middle of a mob. The voice over is good enough though repetitive. Characters can cut each other off at times too.

I'm glad I played this, though the DLCs were a bit disappointing, especially Breakdown as it offers nothing new but randomness and constantly worsening conditions. Lifeline was interesting, but rescuing VIPs was harsh, as sometimes you get there just in time to watch them get torn in half. Still, it offered a much more intense experience and is by far the better DLC.
