The Purity and Concentration of Salt found in the group Mang Squad

HYPOTHESIS:
The purity of salt found in the group Mang Squad is comparable to that produced by a neutralisation reaction of concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid and aqueous sodium hydroxide, with relative purity of up to 99.95%. The concentration of salt found in the group (Mang Squad) is comparable to the average concentration of sodium chloride in the water of the Dead Sea.

AIM:
To determine the purity of salt and determine the concentration of the salt solution found in the group Mang Squad.

REACTION SCHEME:
HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)

METHOD:
Hydrochloric acid (10mL, 2M) was neutralised with sodium hydroxide solution (10mL, 2M) and its pH was confirmed with a pH strip. Water was removed from the solution, leaivng a white, crystalline solid (1.15g, 0.0197mol, 98%).

A sample of salt solution obtained from the group Mang Squad (20mL) had its solvent removed, leaving a white, crystalline solid similar in appearance to the solid obtained by neutralisation (6.73g).

The crystal structures of each solid was analysed and determined to have the exact same crystal structures.

Based on the mass of solid recovered from evaporation, the concentration of salt in solution of the solution obtained from the group Mang Squad was estimated to be 33.65% w/w, which is approximately 0.5% w/w lower than that of the average salt concentration of the waters of the Dead Sea.

ADDENDUM:
Though purity suggests that the salt obtained by this method is safe for consumption by ingestion, tests have shown that the salt displays an anomalous carcinogenic effect, and as such will be classified as a known carcinogen despite being chemically equivalent to sodium chloride. More investigation is required.
