He held in his hands a small cardboard box which had turned the color of wet sand over the years, the bottom left corner had been ripped open and the paper eyelashes stared at the world. There was a crease down the front façade that couldn’t be smoothed out no matter how you tried. There were two blue squiggles left by one of those pens you’re not entirely sure can write, though seemingly they did. Inside it was a bundle of uniformly sized cards – collectibles – of baseball players, football players, and really any kind of sportsman worth collecting.

It is important to emphasize the ‘was’, for every time a player died, John Madden noted it down in his pocketbook and after returning home would crack open the drawers, take out the cardboard box, find the recently deceased and get rid of the card. Once he heard that Jones “Milk” Miehlke was dead as he was eating his morning breakfast. The radio devoted a whole ten seconds and approximately twelve words to one of the most proficient receivers of the ‘84 Cape Tossers team. Mr. Milk was apparently involved in a car accident, alcohol suspected as one of the main culprits. The card which seemed to focus entirely on his inhumanly broad torso was set alight and flickered away into nothingness as Madden held it in pincers over the sink, the brief but bright flame residing in his eyes until it too subsided.

Over the years the card collection had thinned out. It became impossible to field a team from the ‘61 to ‘72 editions. The last of the Mohicans, Bubba Beans, slipped and fell down the stairs on his way to feed his cat. He seized up like an insect and, facing a concussion, admitted defeat and perished. Madden tore up the card and sprinkled it in the compost box for the petunias. He supposed that Bubba wouldn’t mind blooming from time to time.

Every week he would take the box out at least once, and every time it returned to its habitat a few cards lighter, a few years younger. Every passing year made it easier to find the last lost soul, until there were only a handful, until there were only two, until only Abner ‘Bobby’ Browne remained, and then he too perished along with his wife and pilot in a private plane crash, and he too was taken out of the box, and briefly inspected, and fed to the flaming grille, and then there were none.

That day the dinner was Blessed by the Holy Spirit Smoke of the Card of Abner ‘Bobby’ Browne.

“You got any of the cards with the – the players on them?” he said with a slight rattle in his voice. The clerk pointed to the plastic bags hanging off one of those display trees that were supposed to rotate, but for some mysterious, most likely budgetary, reasons did not. Madden bought five of each color or thirty in total. And a bag of peppermints.

He returned home and with shaky hands, hands which seemed to turn gaunter and grayer with each passing minute, tore open each packet and perused the cards. Young players, an odd bearded veteran here or there, all very colorful and well laminated. Madden transferred the peppermint sucker from one side of his mouth to the other with his tongue. He held the cards and lightly tapped them on the desk, making sure they’re at least somewhat neatly in order, and moved them into the old cardboard box. They were slightly smaller than their predecessors. He placed it in the drawer and closed it, and sat in silence, only the peppermint rattling against his teeth. With some difficulty he chewed down the thin puck remainder and then that too was over and done with.

“Honey,” he said in a raised voice directed downstairs, “tell the kids to come up and see me when they get home.” “Alright,” she said. “I’m tired,” he said, and took off his slippers, and put on the socks which didn’t have holes in them, and made sure his polo shirt was clean, and got into the bed, and covered himself up, and died.

The following criteria were identified as critical for the success of the WHITAKER Project.

The temperature conditions must not exceed 323K.
The modules must be staged in alphabetical order.
The distribution of the modules must be within 7-15 degrees difference in latitude from the position of the launch.
The modules shall distribute within 0h35m, 10h12m, 22h00m, and 45h00m, respectively.
Preliminary observation of the WHITAKER Project must be done immediately upon launch, until the distribution of the first module.
OLDMAN must be notified upon the success or failure of each distribution of the modules.
In case of technical failure, the emergency line ALPHA must be utilized immediately.
In case of medical, radiological, chemical, or bacteriological failure, the emergency line BETA must be utilized.
In case of unwarranted royalty, the emergency line 900 must be utilized.
On fulfillment of T-02-052 of WHITAKER Project, areas ALMOND, HAZEL, and PECAN must be evacuated immediately and placed under military jurisdiction for a safety cordon.

Modules 1 through 4 were successfully distributed in their designated orbits. Radioactivity indicators were nominal. At 2100 O'RIORDAN had identified successful visual sighting of the first module via the Visi-o-scope in ALMOND.

According to O'RIORDAN, Module 1 appeared undamaged and provided a view we estimated to be 5 years into the past. This was as projected by the original calculations, although visual identification of the time warp was not completed until the sighting of Module 4 to be covered below.

RATNER acquired visual sighting of Modules 2 and 3 at 2125. The modules appeared undamaged and provided a view we estimated to be 15 and 30 years into the past respectively. WORMLEY and SCHONBERG were assigned direct monitoring duties until Module 4 was visually identified.

WORMLEY and VESUVIUS had become irrational after prolonged exposure to Modules 3 and 4. On primary estimations, the psychosomatic impact of retrospective vision was insufficient enough to cause immediate and fatal brain hemorrhage, but remained significant enough to induce angst, nausea, anxiety, increased blood pressure, and rapid exchanges between violent behavior and uncontrollable grief. WORMLEY in particular exhibited disturbing signs of despair and proved unconsolable [sic]. He was promptly dispatched to the medical bay for further inspection.

In moments of lucidity VESUVIUS commented on the difficulty in comprehending the visible past, and found it incredibly distressing to have witnessed

was found deceased in the medication compartment of the medical bay. Multiple morphine injections allowed to stabilize the condition of VESUVIUS, and neurologists were assigned to the unit together with members of the military.

RESULTS

Observed reactions to the WHITAKER and ZENITH projects allows us to conclude the technical feasibility of long-range retrospectrometry via liquid fuel launch and nuclear propulsion until orbital delivery.

Projects WHITAKER and ZENITH had remained within originally assigned budgets under the condition that superfluous materials from connected departments could be used allowing for cooperation between distribution centers.

Prolonged exposure to retrospectrometry modules and retrospectrometry in particular was found to cause profound psychological damage at unprecedented pace. Although further investigation is necessary, we assume that greater distance offered by retrospectrometry will correlate with the increase in mental disturbance for the observer. Primary discussions suggest mental strain and possible incapability of the brain to reconcile visions provided via retrospectrometry with the subjects' previous education, most significantly in history.

It is hereby suggested that future retrospectrometry studies be done on uneducated or poorly educated subjects to ensure that observations do not interfere with expectations of the past. It is also suggested that subjects with mental deficiencies, retardation, mental and psychic disorders be exposed to retrospectrometry to identify a causality in the psychological damage if such is applicable to the aforementioned subject group.

It is also suggested that retrospectrometry at the current stage remain CLASSIFIED and unavailable to the public for danger of city-, national, and international disturbances that may result from such activities. If future experiments prove fruitful, this may be alleviated by
