Blade Runner is an American neo-noir science fiction film produced in 1982 by Ridley Scott, starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos, Sean Young and Daryl Hannah. The screenplay of the film was written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, and it is a film adaptation of the science fiction novel The Electric Sheep by Philip K. D@c/k, published in 1968.

The film presents a dystopian Los Angeles, in which genetically advanced "replicants" are manufactured by the powerful company Tyrell Corporation, which are outwardly similar to humans. Their use on Earth is prohibited, and they are regulated exclusively for dangerous or medical work, in offworld colonies. Replicants who defy the ban and return to Earth are sought out and killed ("taken down") by special police operatives known as "Blade Runners". The film focuses on a group of recently escaped replicants hiding out in Los Angeles and seasoned Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who reluctantly accepts the mission to hunt them down.

Blade Runner was initially met with mixed reviews: some were displeased with its pacing, while others were pleased with its thematic complexity. A year after its release, the film won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. Blade Runner, despite not performing well in North America, has since become a cult film.As it received praise for its design, which depicts an "altered" future (retrofuturism), it remains a leading example of neo-noir cinema.He brought the work of Philip K. ♥♥♥♥ into the spotlight in Hollywood, and several later films were based on his work. Ridley Scott describes Blade Runner as "probably" his most complete and personal film. In 1993 the film was selected for inclusion in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Blade Runner is now regarded by many critics as one of the best science fiction films ever made. The music of the film was written by the Greek composer Vangelis. A sequel, Blade Runner 2049, was released in October 2017.

Seven versions of the film were released for various markets, as a result of contradictory changes made by the film's directors. In 1992, the Director's Cut version was released. This, combined with the film's popularity on video rentals, made it one of the first films to be released on DVD, resulting in improved picture and sound quality. In 2007, Warner Bros. released the Final Cut of the film, a digitally enhanced version for its 25th anniversary. This is the only version in which Scott had complete artistic freedom, and it was shown in select cinemas.
