Rarely have I come across a game that illicits a response of empathy... At first I was not too keen on OXENFREE's heavy use of dialogue, and quick response system that would lead me to my experience. But I was slowly drawn to the mystery, the relationships, the depth of each characters' flaws and often questionable backgrounds,

OXENFREE thrives on your connection to the characters, first and foremost. Once you are drawn in to their plight, you are invested in their survival, and the hook is set to motivate you to see these individuals to safety, to peace and even moreso, to reconciliation. Your decisions; your reactions and responses are the catalyst for how these friends interact. And as the mystery evolves, how they respond will be because of your actions.

It is this depth; the character and extremely vivid sci-fi story that makes OXENFREE an unheralded gem of an adventure. I played through without looking at the achievement requirements and received only 4 of 20 achievements, though I finished the game without any idea I was on the hook for anything. One achievement may be for making people hate you; while others will be for making people care... To me, the achievements simply don't matter, as I responded how I would should as a person; I was invested and I cared. That alone is an achievement for this game...

Graphics are nice, ran smooth without incident, and controls were excellent. Music is great and the voice acting is actually some of the best I have heard in ages...

I highly recommend OXENFREE if you are a patient, intellectual gamer; one who relishes in the unfolding of a tale, for it is an extremely odd tale indeed. Sci-fi/Twilight Zone fans, meet your new friend. One that I will look forward to visiting again.
