Steam Scams: How They Work & How to Stay Safe
 ️ Beware! Counter-Strike 2 Scammers  ️
Scammers stealing accounts and inventory have become more active in the CS2 community. They act cunningly, gain trust and use various deception schemes.

Main fraud schemes:
🔹 Game interaction – scammers on your team/against you offer to add them as friends, go to Discord, FaceIt or third-party sites.
🔹 Fake friends – strangers add you as friends, claim to have played with you and send suspicious links.
🔹 Phishing sites – copies of Steam and marketplaces steal logins, passwords and Steam Guard codes.
🔹 Social engineering – attackers pretend to be the administration, threaten to block or promise support.

How to protect yourself:
✅ Don't follow unknown links or enter data outside of Steam.
✅ Check your friends - scammers can pretend to be acquaintances.
✅ Use Steam Guard and complex passwords.
✅ Be vigilant - if you are pressured, rushed or manipulated, it is a scam.

What to do if someone tried to deceive you?
🔸 Change your password and set up security.
🔸 Notify Steam Support (official website).
🔸 Warn your friends to avoid falling into the same trap.

Remember: Steam Support will not always be able to return what was stolen. Account protection is only in your hands!

Common Steam Scams and How to Protect Yourself
1. Phishing Websites
How it works:
• You receive a link to a fake login page that looks like Steam.
• You enter your credentials, and scammers steal your account.
• Some sites also ask for your Steam Guard code, allowing them to bypass two-factor authentication (2FA).
How to avoid it:
Always check the URL – official Steam websites use test-steamproxy.haloskins.io or test-steamproxy.haloskins.io/steamstore .
Never enter your Steam login details on unknown sites.
Use a password manager – it won’t autofill credentials on fake sites.
Enable Steam Guard for extra security.

2. Trade Scams
How it works:
• Scammers offer a great trade deal but take your items without sending anything back.
• Fake “middlemen” claim to ensure a safe trade but are actually scammers.
• Items get swapped at the last moment (e.g., an expensive skin is replaced with a cheap one).
How to avoid it:
Always check the trader’s profile – look at their playtime, reviews, and trade history.
Never send items first.
Double-check the trade offer before confirming.
Use Steam’s built-in trade system – never trust third-party “guarantees.”

3. Fake Skin Marketplaces
How it works:
• A site offers to buy or sell skins for real money.
• You enter your Steam credentials, and scammers steal your account.
• Some sites ask you to download a “bot” or “plugin,” which contains malware.
How to avoid it:
Use only trusted platforms (e.g., the Steam Market).
Never download suspicious files.
Never enter your Steam login on third-party websites.

4. Fake Gifts & Giveaways
How it works:
• Scammers send a “gift” via Steam but require you to enter additional login details.
• Sometimes, they ask you to download an “activation file” that steals your data.
How to avoid it:
Only accept gifts through Steam’s official system.
If something seems off, refuse the gift.
Never download unknown files.

5. Discord & Social Media Scams
How it works:
• Someone messages you on Discord, Twitter, or Facebook, pretending to be a Steam admin or a friend.
• They ask you to “verify your account” or provide login details.
• They might send a file containing malware.
How to avoid it:
Valve never contacts users via Discord or social media.
Never share your password with anyone.
Verify the identity of anyone contacting you.

6. Malware & Keyloggers
How it works:
• You download “free games,” “cheats,” or “FPS boosters.”
• These files contain malware that steals your Steam login details.
How to avoid it:
Only download games from official sources like Steam.
Never use cheats – they can lead to a ban and a hacked account.
Install antivirus software and scan downloaded files.

7. Fake Tournaments & Prize Scams
How it works:
• You’re invited to a gaming tournament with a cash prize but must “verify your account” or pay an entry fee.
• Some require you to download a tournament client that contains malware.
How to avoid it:
Verify tournament organizers before joining.
Never send money without a reliable guarantee.
Avoid downloading unknown software.

8. Impersonating Steam Support
How it works:
• You receive a message or email claiming to be from Steam Support.
• They say your account is locked and ask for your login details.
How to avoid it:
Valve never asks for your password.
Don’t click on suspicious email links.
Only contact support via Steam’s official website.

What to Do If You Get Scammed
• Change your Steam password immediately.
• Enable Steam Guard and update your email credentials.
• Report the scam to Steam Support (official site).
• Warn your friends so they don’t fall for the same scam.
