East Coast Mainline
6 items
Description
This section of the East Coast Mainline was operated by 2 companies, and was arguably the most scenic section of the route.
The section between Newcastle and Berwick was built by the Newcastle & Berwick Railway, who later merged with the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway, and the Great North of England Railway to from the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway, who in turn merged with the Leeds Northern Railway and the York and North Midland Railway to form the North Eastern Railway.
The section between Berwick and Edinburgh was built by the North British Railway, who extended their mainline from Edinburgh to Glasgow, Perth and Dundee, as well as operating the famous Carlisle - Edinburgh "Waverley Line".
Together, along with the Great Northern Railway, these 3 companies owned the East Coast Mainline, and in 1862 introduced an express London - Edinburgh service, later named "The Flying Scotsman".
This map allows you to re-create the East Coast Mainline between Newcastle and Edinburgh, as well as many branches in the local area such as:
Newcastle - Blyth
Alnmouth - Coldstream
Edinburgh - St Boswells
Tweedmouth - St Boswells
This version of the map has pre-placed industries, which have been placed roughly to as they are in reality.
(Experimental map sizes must be enabled.)

This is the first map in my East Coast Mainline series, which will include:
ECML South (London - Peterborough / King's Lynn)
ECML Lincolnshire (Peterborough - Doncaster / Grimsby via Boston and Louth)
(Doncaster - York will be included in a potential West Yorkshire urban map)
ECML North East (York - Newcastle)
ECML Northumbria (Newcastle - Edinburgh)
ECML Fife (Edinburgh - Perth / Dundee)
ECML Angus (Perth - Aberdeen)
