British Rail Class 87

The Class 87s were a 36 strong fleet of West Coast Mainline workhorses, built between 1973 and 1975 at Crewe. They featured space-age technology such as rheostatic brakes and 4 separately excited DC traction motors. One member of the class, originally planned as 87036, was built with completely different internals and assigned the /1 subclass. 87101 proved successful and a new subclass of Class 87s using the same internals, but with a sleeker, more streamlined look, were planned, dubbed the 87/2s or InterCity 175; these were reclassified to Class 90 before entering service.
