This phrase, slang and jargon guide is for most things Japanese Pop.

I hope y'all like this phrase book. But please help me fix any incorrect definitions, grammar, typos and such that you may find. Because, I am more familiar with KPop and this is some of the first were I done a bit of research into JPop (This guide is just a tiny peek of me looking at something out of my neck of the woods).

Number - H
# Nin/Number Of Members - The "Number Plus Nin" is to refer how many members are in a group.

2-Shot - A fan meet up with just the idol and the fan doing a photo with just them. It's similar to the "Cheki" events.

48G - An Idol collaboration consisting AKB48, it's sister groups, subgroups and solo singers.

Ace - The one genius member that's regarded as the key to an idol band's success.

AKB48 - An Idol group consisting of teams A, K, B, 4 and 8, that debuted in 2005 in Akihabara, Tokyo.

AKB48 Kouhaku Utagassen - This is an end of the year concert of the 48G were idol members are separated into two teams and compete against each other.

AKS - The agency that AKB48, SKE48, and HKT48 works for.

Akushukai - This is a meet and greet event where fans can shake hands with an Idol (aka Handshake Event).

Alice Project - A collaboration of different idol groups that have themes.

Angerme - S/mileage Idol band's former name.

Baito AKB - Part time Idol members of AKB48.

Birthday Event - It's actually a special event surrounding an idol's birthday, how this is done depends on the company. It's also a time for fans to make flower installations for public viewing. (aka "Seitansai").

Captain - The leader of the band.

Chika Idol - Underground Idols

Chekikai - It's just an "Instant camera meeting" and one of the many forms of "tokuten", it's a fan meets celebrity meet up.

Co-Captain - The Captain's assistant and a co-leader.

Coupling Song - The single's second track. This is also called a "B-Side Track."

Country Girls - It's Country Musume's revival name.

Dansei Idol - A male idol. (aka "Idol Danshi")

DD - This is short for "Daremo Daisuki", it means when a fandom term supports all the group members equally. (aka "Multi-Fandom").

Draft Kaigi - This event were AKB48 tries to find and audition new potentials to train as idols.

E-Girls - It's suppose to be the female version of EXILE, a male idol band.

Furi-Copy - It's when a fan copying the choreography of the songs that idols are preforming. It literally means "appearance copy."

Gachi-Koi - Meaning "Falling in love with their Oshi." It's mainly a fan that really wants the sparks to fly between him and his idol.

Generation - These are bands that have members being added frequently, those that first debuted are "Generation 1" and so forth. Aka "Ki."

Graduation - A farewell concert for an idol/band, due to leaving, like retiring. (Aka "Sotsugyou.")

Gravure - Media of female idols that are aim at men.

Hafu - A word meaning "Biracial", this is a fandom term to refer to an idol that's half-Japanese.
I - L
Ichiban - A fandom term meaning a favorite member of an idol band, this word is usually use by fans of male idol groups. Similar to the word "Bias".

iDOL Street - An idol label that's managed by Avex, one of Japan's biggest music record companies.

Ikemen - A young handsome, and charismatic man.

Image Color - A color that's assign to band members, so, fans can tell 'em apart. (aka "Member Colors")

JKT48 - This is AKB48's cousin in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Kakkoii - A Japanese word meaning "Cool."

Kami7 - The top seven spots located in the senbatu sousenkyo.

Kamiban - The main favorite band member across all groups.

Kamioshi - A term that has many meanings and interpretations, but it's mainly to describe one's favorite idol.

Kawaii - A Japanese word meaning "Cute."

Kenashi Ai - The definition is when a fan uses hateful words and such towards an idol, but they're lying like a tsundere.

Kennin - It's when an idol is in two different sister groups at the same time. (aka "Concurrent Position.")

Lineup - A Japanese word meaning "Selection", this comes from the 48G idols. It's when a band has insanely huge number of members to the point that they can't fit on stage. (Aka "Senbatsu".)

Locodol - Short for Local Idol, these types of idol bands only stay in one particular area.

Love Ban - This term is to describe the "No romance, dating or lovely-dovey of any kind while working in a band/being a solo artist." rule.

Media Senbatsu - This is when the A-Side single band gets invited to TV Shows and do other forms of promotions for said single.

Member Ai - A Japanese word meaning "Fanservice," mainly when band members act lovely-dovey with each other on camera. (aka "Skinship")

Mix - This is a type of mix that fans sing and chant that follows a specific pattern.

Nogizakaka46 - This group is supposed to be AKB48's rival group, they only have generations.

Nioshi - A second favorite idol.

Office - This word is referring to the recording agency/company that the Idol/Idol group works for.

Oshimen - A term that's refer as your favorite band member, this is mainly use for female Idol bands. There's different types of Oshimen:
  • "Hako-Oshi" - Meaning "Box Push", this fan supports the whole group.
  • "Tan-Oshi" - Meaning "Single Push", this type of fan describes himself as supporting this specific individual idol, never mind the band. (aka "Top Oshi.")
  • "Kami-Oshi" - Meaning "God Push", this fan supports one member above all else, even if said fan supports other idols.
  • "Oshi-Hen" - Meaning "Push Change", this term is to describe changing one's Oshimen.

Onna Wota-Wota - This type of fan likes the fans of an idol/band, not necessarily the idol/band itself.

Oshihen - The process one goes through finding a new oshimen.

Penlight - Just a battery-powered glow sticks.

PV - Short for "Promotional Videos." They're basically music videos.
Q - T
Release Event - A bonus event that one can only gain access by buying the copies of an idol/idol band's release. (Aka "Tokuten").

Request Hour - It's the yearly song ranking event.

Riako - A shorten word meaning "I'm in real love." It's mainly the female version of the "Gachi-koi", were the fan really wants the sparks to fly with her and her idol. (aka "Riaru Ni Koi ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥").

Senbatsu - The members that were shown in the A-Side single.

Senbatsu Sousenkyo - This type of election is a popularity contest, the few ways to vote is get tickets, to get tickets it's either to buy the last single or to be a member of the idol/band's fanclub. (aka "Election")

Shonichi - The first time stage performance or the first time a performance is done by revival new lineup or new team.

Shuffle - This is a form of reforming and making a new team, it's when teams are re-shuffle partially or entirely with the existing members intact.

Single Unit - A temporary band that's form to perform B-Sides on 48G singles.

SNH48 - This is AKB48's cousin group that's based in China.

Stardust Promotions - The Idol agency that is managing several bands, like Momoiro Clover Z, Team Syachihoko, and many others.

Team Surprise - They're a temporary band that released two "stages" series of singles to advertising pachinko game.

Theater - This is mainly referring to 48G's sister groups that have their own theater, which is located in the city on which they regularly preform.

Trainee - A trainee is a student that's learning how to be an idol (aka "Kenshuusei", "Kenkyuusei" or "Research Student")

Transfer - It's when an idol is transferred from one band to another or from one team to another within the same band.
U - V
Uchiwa - These types of fans are use by fans to show support for their favorite idol.

Unit Matsuri - This is a yearly event were the sub-suits get to shine more than usual, like when their songs and solo songs are performed.
W - Z
Wota - A word meaning JPop Idol fans, it's pronounce "Ota."

Wotagei - A dance that JPop fans do at concerts.

X-Nin - A Japanese word meaning "X-People." This word is used to describe how many members are in a band and said band's size.

Yoshimoto - An agency that NMB48 works for.
